1.6 V6 turbocharged engines with a large battery pack and a couple of systems to harvest wasted energy. A turbo naturally makes an engine quieter because before it's just straight through exhausts with nothing in the way of the high velocity gas. Sound is also technically wasted energy. They actually now have much more peak torque and they are going to be massively fast in a straight line because of that and less drag. They are gonna be hitting 230mph+ at Monza. |

All the rules changes would get accustomed to has time goes on! Hamilton seem to be finding joy now so i will say he makes hay while the sunshines now because any moment vettel picks it would be a smooth ride for the redbull lad, hes such a fast learner

The sound might seem disappointing and engine rule changes expensive but necessary. No manufacturer cared about the sport much because it was becoming irrelevant, the engine technology outmoded and pointless in relation to road car technology. The new powertrains are bang up to date and their development totally useful to modern hybrid designs. Which is why Honda are coming back. They never would have without this. |

They just hybrids. They still have like a 650bhp ICE. I quite like all the whistling and whirring they sound more mechanical than they ever have if anything, the previous turbo era was one of the sport's very best

Back then they still had fuel constraints, boost contraints, similar sized engines. They can sort out the terrible ugly noses I think for next season but the power units are here to stay. It's 2014, super high revving naturally aspirated engines are basically irrelevant, naturally aspirated is slowly becoming irrelevant for modern road cars. Most supercars these days have turbochargers and whatnot on them, the cutting edge ones (e.g La Ferrari, 918, P1) are hybrids the same because it does have advantages. We have a limited amount of oil in the world. They merely reflect the computer age, high tech hybrid and electric systems more and more prevalent. |

They squirm about a lot more that's for sure. They seem very difficult to drive at the moment. Downforce is often the bane of good racing, the less there is of that and the more power the better for the racing. I was sort of hoping for a wet race, maybe one soon |

don't like the sound of the engine, they sound like Scalextric slot cars.

Maybe they just need to be louder then. Maybe it's also a shock for people that hadn't heard them before this weekend? I followed it for a long time and heard the engines middle of last year and the testing so used to it now

Yes. But I have always followed F1, I liked F1 before I liked anything else it's kind of my first sporting love. I distinctly remember watching Mansell destroy everyone in 1992 and then race my F1 toys around the carpet after at about 6 years old ![]() Two Williams Renault F1 cars, the proper transporter truck that they could actually load in the back. ![]() Happy days. |
