I have a G4 imac running tiger and a G4 Mac pro running leopard. Both have 1ghz power pc cpu's. I cant stream you tube videos on either of them anyone know why? My mate has an ancient windows pc running at a paltry 500mhz cpu and he can stream you tube fine. So surely it cant be a question of cpu power in my case? Videos either freeze, dont play smooth, or dont play at all. Same on both macs. |

Well I know G4 is hardly state of the art these days but my mates pc is much older than my macs. Thought macs were meant to be ahead of their time lol? If you cant do a simple thing like this on 1ghz mac it doesnt do much to perswade me to buy a new mac if they fall that behind in just 6 years.

Hi, eumig and welcome. Unfortunately, you won't be able to update Flash, sucks I know. The problem isn't the cpu speed-its the cpu type. Its a power pc cpu and most sites need intel. If you want youtube, upgrade to an intel machine. Simple

Upgrade to an intel, spend a fortune just so I Can watch you tube clips? No ta, I can buy a secondhand dual core windows tower for 150 quid lol. And that will do everything an intel mac will do at a fraction of the cost and give me far more choice with software titles. Goodbye mac hello windows!

Hang on a minute though, couldnt I upgrade my mac pro to an intel motherboard and core 2 cpu? Would that be a viable option or would 0SX not, then recognise my mac as a mac? Would it depend on what motherboard purpose built intel macs use? My mac pro is same form factor as a windows tower where upgrades are concerned.

I know I can do precious little with the imac but maybe the mac pro is my ticket to the modern mac world?

(i know if you change the motherboard in a windows pc windows classes it as a new computer in which case you may have to buy another license)

You mean 0SX would refuse to install on an upgraded mac pro? But isnt the whole idea behind the mac pro layout designed so it can be upgraded like a windows tower?

hackintosh or new mac or the middle path - windows

@eumig | 16 April 11 |
So there must be a way of finding out the exact motherboard and cpu in a purpose built intel mac. Once you have varified that surely 0SX would then recognise that hardware as certified?

Somebody must have done it.

apples hardware uses a modified bios. you cant run them on exactly identical hardware without hackintosh
