Dont know about others but I was too bored with the red light coming out of my optical mouse... It looks so childish :-).... So today I was playing around with the red LED inside the mouse and experimenting with quite a lot of diff colour LED's from my stock... Most of them worked except the yellow and white LED... But surprisingly, an InfraRed LED worked like a charm with invisible beam... Now I've the mouse I wanted, no fancy lights, and an added accuracy... Try it... |

An IR LED taken out from an old remote control will work... Besides IR LED's are easily available and very cheap...

@spart... Theoritically, u are right... Coz the red light will not be visible unless u are keen enough to pick up the mouse from the surface.... But practally, most of the time playing around with the mouse, the bright red beam is irritating... Wanted to replace with a blue one, but overjoyed when it worked with IR... Look like a dead mouse...lol

Anyways, it depends on personal choice... Thought, someone might be thinking to get rid of that red light like me..... I've changed the red indicators of my CPU, SPEAKER, UPS etc into blue, orange and green... I HATE RED...lol....

i like the part where it sais 'increased accuracy' ... also,my mouse can work picked off from the surface,in the air,but only slightly away... soooo,i guess replacing the led with infrared will increase this distance limit?

IR has longer wavelength than visible red light allowing it to be more powerful than the red LED... And it also ensures better surface readability comparing to the normal red light, resulting more accuracy... But it all dependents on the sensor camera of the mouse... Some cheap mouse sensors are not responsive to IR, coz I found my old logitech not working with IR LED's...

Erm , how did you go about replacing that little ccd for one that detects infrared light ? And would it not have been easier to shell out money for a laser mouse ? Actually you left too many holes in your story to be believed .

No, it doesn't... The sensor CCD must detect a surface within a short distance, and with glass or mirror IR cannot create a clear reflective surface...

But with coloured light it works...not fully but works due to reflection
