low level is just a basic wipe..... higher levels writes over the drive many times normally with 1's and 0's, the higher the level the more times it does it, the theory behind it is to render what ever was on the drive becomes harder to recover

Low level would be just erasing the directory as in FAT , file allocation table . FAT32 is just the 32 bit version . Advanced is NTFS .

wrong ... so very wrong, they are FILE SYSTEMS... and have nothing what so ever to do with 'what is formating' they are types of file system used to store data AFTER a drive has been wiped

they are the file systems... the post writer asked 'what is low level formating' NOT what are the types of file system used after formating

a low level format should make your drive totaly raw,.al sectors and track numbers are removed... this makes te drive inaccessable by an o.s . often it can involve high currents being passed through the platter and this will hopefully zero state the drive... you then create a partition which sets up your track, sector and data I/O size./ layout. you can then format your newly configured drive.

today very few drives allow low level formatting. so you have to rely on mltiple writes to overwrite and make sure your data cannot be recovered. with a low level format it is impossible to recover the drive 1s the new partition and format has been created after the low level wipe. as the partition and format info does not start in the same place after each low level wipe. it is the most secure
