Nah they were on a timer, everything was planned to the nearest second and Rick gotta be saved. They knew the herd was coming and any time wasted they would have been in the middle of it. I would have left that hilltop dude behind though, backstabbing parasite, why go back for him. |

It's always when they start gloating about not dying or they're being too good or nice that things happen to them, the aim to keep alive on Walking Dead is to keep it on the edge. Not too nice and still a bit nasty but not too cruell and don't gloat unless you're Morgan.
