Yoji. Sony cut down on hardware costs by removing stuff including the BC chip and USB ports. I do know that some used software emulation though.

The original j*p machines basically had a Ps2 inside, the two main processors so they played virtually everything. For PAL launch they tore out the central processor, but retained PS2's GPU and software emulated Ps2's EE chip. It reduced compatibility, but still worked fine. Then after the 80gb MGS4 edition i believe they tore PS2's GPU out for good and killed emulation for good

This is what it was I still love my 60gb machine but the thing pulls down like 200 watts versus everyone with a new slim and about 75w
