I'm not noticeably patriotic, but I have to agree. The BBC screened a programme called Heavy Metal Britannia in which Rob Halford of Judas Priest described growing up in the Black Country (an area of England so called because of the cr*p belching out of factory chimneys and settling on the land). He described the ever-present thudding of the steam hammers that you could hear even whilst in school, and without any pollution constraints as he said: 'We were literally breathing in Heavy Metals'. And although there are many, many more, one only has to point to Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin (although Blue Cheer, and Vanilla Fudge deserve credit in America and Steppenwolf who first used the term 'Heavy Metal Thunder' in 'Born to be Wild', but we breathed it..

The US is way ahead with pretty much everything concerning Metal bands, currently, and for the last 25 years at least or more. The UK has had a handful of good, successful metal bands, same with Aus, the US has hundreds.

it's worth bearing in mind that One Direction, Justin Bieber and JLS are 'successful'. Quality is rarely 'successful'.

UK is pretty much where heavy metal took it's form but how the thing is there these days? Pretty much 0 decent metal bands after 80's. Indie rock/modern rock is alive and well though, all the time some british alternative bands come up. For alternative rock brits have the elite, but when it comes to metal Australia is out of the question; nothing decent came out of UK in the past 30 years; Canada never had much, except for a couple of decent bands like Voivod and Anvil. US has a very lively ug scene for every sub-genre and loads of decent stuff coming from there. Though metal never hit the mainstream there after Metallica's Black album, except for a couple of cr*ppy pop metal bands. Personally I'd say Finland and Sweden have the finest scenes, alive and well since mid 80's, rock/metal are pretty much mainstream yet there's the ug scenes where most of the magic happens. Also a plenty of internationally succeeded bands which came either from Sweden or Finland.
