Yes mackie make good mixers and so do soundcraft. Avoid behringer mixers because they can be noisy. There are a huge number of reviews on the net. Look at say mackies website decide what size desk you need and look up reviews for it on google.

A good set of monitor speakers is essential, but you also need to learn to read a spectral analyzer so you can see which frequencies are too loud and which need turning up

And again choose the desk size depending on what you plan to do. If your recording with the desk look at features like how many direct outs and sub groups it has because these can go back to the inputs of your audio interface for recording purposes.

If its your first foray into recording. Id say ignore most of the responses as theres no use buying hi tech expensive equipment if your just starting out and dont know how it all works. Start small with basic stuff (computer, speakers, sony acid and a mic) before venturing into spectral analysers, mixers etc

My mates just use the basic computer, acid n mic setup to make their hiphop albums and theirs absolutely nothing wrong with the sound

but you also need to learn to read a spectral analyzer so you can see which frequencies are too loud and which need turning up - use your ears for mixing/mastering not your eyes

a reliable pc...a pci Creative E-mu 4/4 hd audio card. a World Wide Music 8 channel mixer. 2 Roland headsets. Behringer Studio Monitors. M-audio midi controller. Behringer C1 condenser mic... and Steinberg Nuendo as my DAW... Thats my bedroom setup and it works wonders...for years

Why do you choose to use nuendo? I just find its overkill. Most people who use it could get away with using another daw, but it seems that because its the most expensive (discounting PT) people would assume its the best.
