I remember the bang when the buncefield oil depot exploded in Hemel Hempstead...I was 30 mile away in Wycombe and it shook the house and rattled the Windows at that distance...and... I remember hearing Concorde go, you could hear it all along the M4 corridor. Reading, scumdon, Bristol etc... It didn't kick into supersonic mode til it cleared the Bristol channel but you could sometimes hear the sonic boom in Weston super mare or in various north Devon seaside towns...

That creaked the bedroom door frame in my old flat, and i was the other side of Milton Keynes near the Northants border! I was in bed on my phone, probably on here. I met the mrs in '08 so it must've been before then, time ago now. |

@ 9362 - 4.05.16 - 12:53am That's the one I heard,28ppl dead.you don't forget that No, I'd imagine that would stick in the mind. Strictly speaking though, what you heard wasn't a sonic boom. It was just the noise of the explosion itself. You may be confusing a sonic boom with the supersonic percussive shock waves that are produced by a large explosion, which are themselves silent, as they travel faster than sound ahead of the actual noise from the explosion. |

Thinking back, I have heard sonic booms...A holiday in Israel in 83, on a kibbutz near Haifa...heard a few shells land some way off, fired by the Syrians in the Golan heights...one of the permanent staff told us to wait and watch....about 10 minutes later 4 Israeli jets went overhead, silently and fkn quickly...then the sonic boom got mixed up sound of the bombs that hit the shell launch site...Very loud and a bit exciting...

Used to hear them all the time when I was a kid, the americans used to fly their F111's up and down the east yorkshire coast doing practice bombing runs on target barges moored in the sea off RAF Cowden range.

RAF use the Trent for practicing bombing runs so I probably heard a few in the 80's
