Echidnas and the Platypus evolved separately from other mammals. Diverged much earlier from cynodont reptilian-like early mammals. Through double mutation of a venom gene, the Platypus developed a venomous spur on its legs, the males. Very similar to the venom gene in snakes but, still, divergent evolution due to the double mutation. They survived to present day because of their water habitat. Later marsupial species couldn't adapt the an water environment due to the need of carrying love young at all times. Echidnas used to live within a watery environment but took to land much later. The Long-Beaked Echidna is the closest to the Platypus. |

Kinda disappointed that it was such a quick journey. I thought it would be a couple days to a week or two. Oh well. I'm still happy for him.

The delay was apparently due to high winds, btw.
