@ obi_jon - 15.01.22 - 11:20am JWST completed it's deployment phase last week, all the delicate foldy-up bits unfurled without a hitch. It now just has to perform a small course adjustment manoeuvre before arriving at it's final destination(LeGrange point, L2) in around a fortnight's time. JWST is currently about a week into it's 5 week instrument calibration phase to make sure everything is working and aligned correctly. All being well, the first images are expected to arrive sometime towards the end of February. I really can't wait to see. |

Correction: the JWST will begin taking it's first test images in late February but these are likely to be blurry, out of focus affairs. The first proper images aren't due until April. |

Each 'arm' of the Milky Way Galaxy is mostly comprised of gases. Earth is in the second largest galaxy of the Local Group - a galaxy called the Milky Way. The Milky Way is a large spiral galaxy. Earth is located in one of the spiral arms of the Milky Way (called the Orion Arm) which lies about two-thirds of the way out from the center of the Galaxy. |

Oh, gases and dust (as well as stars).. that's what each arm of the Milky Way is made of. Plenty of dust floating around. Our arm (Orion Arm/Orion Spur/Local Arm) is a branch off from the Sagittarius Arm. It's a like a splinter of that arm. |

The latest test image from the JWST. The exaggerated spikeyness of the star in the image is a result of the configuration of the telescopes hexagonal mirrors during it's final alignment and focus calibration testing, which the mission team says have shown that the telescope is performing even better than they had expected it to. The first full scientific observations are due to begin in June. |

The Hawking Paradox: may just have been solved... by something they're calling 'quantum hair'. http://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.128.111301 By my rough calculations on the back of a beermat, the comedic potential of a 'super-massive hairy black hole' is potentially infinite |

The first full scientific observations are due to begin in June. Apparently they are being very quiet about what the first targets will be. makes you wonder exactly why that is.. I'm guessing nearby exoplanets and I'm expecting some startling news of some kind to pop up, just a feeling I have. |
