I actually heard this for real: Why do so many Spanish places have Arab sounding names? And why are some of their building like those you get in the Middle East?

It's called washing up because in the olden days, the work was done by maids etc DOWN in the scullery. They got the dirty plates which were sent down to them, washed them and then sent them back up. Hence, washing up.
