@ 3mel - 16.05.20 - 10:00am he either is or isn't. doesn't sound right to me but it's not something I'm gonna look up. He's just doing the work for himself temporarily, he's not earning enough to pay the bills but makes up the 20 percent and overtime money he's missing so he cant afford to come off furlough either. Should he be punished and seen as a cheat or is it well done for using his initiative? |

@ dan27notts - 16.05.20 - 10:22am He's just doing the work for himself temporarily, he's not earning enough to pay the bills but makes up the 20 percent and overtime money he's missing so he cant afford to come off furlough either. Should he be punished and seen as a cheat or is it well done for using his initiative? The government has got more important things to worry about than your mate doing some gardening or odd jobs for people to make some money, same as they aren't going to be bothered about people responding to an email or doing some administrative work to stop their companies going bust if furloughed, its going on everywhere and times are different right now and people are doing what they need to do to pay bills, mortgages and rent which would be a bigger problem if loads of people missed those payments. |

Coronavirus: Should furloughed workers offer their skills for free? Many furloughed workers, with time on their hands, are offering up their skills for free, but some freelancers are taking issue with the trend. I was sick of making banana bread! jokes Stella Norris. The 31-year-old normally works as a digital marketing manager for a London arts agency. Shes been furloughed and wants desperately to return to her old job but in the meantime, shes working from home, volunteering for a charity called Children of Rwanda. Furloughed workers are those who are being asked to stay at home by employers during the coronavirus lockdown on 80 salary. This is funded by the governments Job Retention Scheme, which opened on 20 April. Stella was matched up by Furlonteer.com, one of a growing number of platforms connecting furloughed workers to organisations that need help. |

This may seem well-intentioned, but some are crying foul. Freelancers and the self-employed dont have access to the furlough scheme and have been left short of work and income. They only gained access to theSelf Employed Income Support Schemeon 13 May, and some complain they are not eligible due to its terms. Helen Parton, a freelance journalist who works in design publishing, feels volunteering platforms are unjust, taking potential work away from people like her. No-one should be using this crisis as an excuse to pick up some free labour, he says. Tech companies encouraging 'volunteering' work sets a deeply disturbing precedent and opens the door for mass exploitation at a time when freelancers are hugely vulnerable. Furlough Rules UK's Job Retention Scheme opened on 20 April and was extended to last until October You cannot do any work for your employer while furloughed, though part-time work allowed from August Government pays up to 80 of your salary. Maximum claim is 2,500 per month per employee - from August employer will help meet costs of scheme Employers can top up furlough income You can work for other firms if this doesn't breach contracts You can volunteer in the community or even for your company as long as you aren't creating revenue or providing a service |

@ dan27notts - 16.05.20 - 09:46am I know a lad on furlough thats been working doing peoples garden's and driveways, mainly because he's bored. Should he be treated as a benefit cheat? Do you see him as a benefit cheat? |
