Not acid, assuming you were using alkaline AA batteries it would be potassium hydroxide which is a strong base.

Saying that though you know your electrical sh*t so you might have had fancy lead acid 1.5v aa batteries which may or may not exist

It was 1982, most batteries were zinc carbon, and leaked an acidic base liquid if left in place once depleted.
