Bishops fear owning a Bible could be hate crime under new Scots law. The Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Bill looks to extend the law on hate crime covering particular characteristics, including religion, sexual orientation and transgender identity. If the law is passed by Holyrood, it means that words or behaviour considered to be abusive and likely to stir up hatred would constitute an offence. With section five of the legislation creating an offence of possessing inflammatory material, they fear the low threshold in the proposed new laws could render material such as the Bible ... as being inflammatory under the new provision. https So greater extention on 'hate crimes' to cover virtually anything that could be considered offensive, so much so that if it wasn't for these priests who feel the bible may fall within the emblem of the new provision, little media attention was even being paid to the bill.... The bishops warned how hatred is defined is not clear which leaves it open to wide interpretation - adding this could lead to vexatious claims having to be dealt with by police. In their submission they also stressed criminalising conduct is a serious step that should not be taken lightly. |

Owning a bible will not become a hate crime in Scottish law. And rightly so. Too much Catholic and Protestant bullcrap here.

The Scottish government's plans for new hate crime laws could devastate the legitimacy of the police, a group representing officers has claimed. Ministers say the Hate Crime Bill will offer greater protection for victims at a time when offences are on the rise. But the Scottish Police Federation said it would see officers policing speech and harm relations with the public. The Law Society of Scotland has also said a lack of clarity in the bill could threaten freedom of expression. The Scottish Police Federation, which represents 98 of officers, warned that the bill could lead to police officers determining free speech and thereby devastate the legitimacy of the police service. The federation said it could cause a significant increase in police workload and demand, complicating the law with new rules which are too vague to be implemented So don't like what something is said? Hate crime..... |

@ ogdenz - 30.07.20 - 11:39pm Owning a bible will not become a hate crime in Scottish law. And rightly so. Too much Catholic and Protestant bullcrap here. The issue of contention isn't in the will it happen or not; it's rather, should the state be vested with so much power that they could make it happen in the right circumstances? Also; the Police is as concerned as religious clerics. |
