In my experience, no. That's part of the condition, drink through the waking hours, if not they're suffering. It's an addiction.Personally I do like a good few beers, not everyday though, green everyday and the other on a wreck night.

I used to love beer and drink lots of the stuff. Now I'm currently drinking no alcohol at all as I'm on medication. I've had a few alcohol free beers tonight and they were ok. |

I've known what I suppose would be called 'functioning alcoholics' and I've also known a few full on, drinking twenty four seven alcoholics I think if they're working and s**t then there's still hope for them. |

Alcoholics get around hangovers by the 'hair of the dog thing'. A sure way of curing a hangover is another drink, but it only postpones it. A 'functioning alcoholic' isn't going to be plastered at any point, just living in that middle ground between being knocked and holding off. It's a balancing act of compromised normality. The addiction is obvious first thing in the morning, when the first thing you do is get out of bed and get your hit. Even admitting you can't function properly until you've had it. Else there will be behaviour problems. Might even have to take a break from work a couple of times before lunch to get another hit, get you back on the level. Addiction of the highest order, doing it throughout the day, just to calm your nerves and feel normal. That's coffee. That's smokers. That's alcoholics. That's when you know you have a problem. |

My older sister is more the functional alcoholic type, also holds down a decent job. My younger sister (the 50-60 hour a week job) is definitively an alcoholic, the type that has a medical emergency if she doesn't drink. She's 35. There's still hope but it is a long road. I was always an irregular binge drinker over the years, but by the end of my relationship with alcohol (some 6-7 years ago now), I was a 2-3 bottles of wine a night type. So I quit. And am now able to support my sister if she chooses to do the same. I hope she does. |

You are spot on about alcoholism. But coffee should not be written nowhere near Smoking or alcoholism. I quit caffeine for three months just to see how bad my dependency was and whether I would crash like they say. All I felt during those few months was just normal productivity and alertness. Cut short to few months later, I drink 15-20 cups of coffee a day. My productivity is back to an all time high. I am fast and get sh*t done qiicker. I feel great with zero side effects. Coffee is a gift from the Gods, and I have absolutely nothing bad to say about it. |

Work keeps me busy on weekdays, so I drink mostly on Fridays or at the weekends - and when I do, I drink a full bottle of rum or whiskey with coke (maybe a few vodka shots, and a few tails if I'm going to a bar) enough to get me merry, and dance!
