No but your own personal interests may not be compatible with the majority's welfare. So therefore you must decide who's interest to support. Do you do the humanitarian thing and put everyone's interest above your own? or do you say fk em I'm doing this for me ? |

You've a good point.

@ vampboy - 8.07.20 - 07:40pm Why can't personal self~serving interests coincide with the desire to see the wefare of people? Does becoming a politician means you forsake being human as well? in general ''party politics'' does compromise the individual to a varying extent yes. you have only to watch politicians talk and see them choosing their words in order to protect themselves from having those words used against them. instead of whatever it is they feel is in the interest of the majority, it becomes whatever is in the interest of the party. if we eliminated the party system and had a parliament or senate of non aligned representatives elected to office within government, there'd be debate over proposals and votes to go forward or not based only on the merits of the proposals. the amount of time and energy that gets wasted on competition instead of the search for the best possible solution is depressing. as many reasons as can be eliminated that stand in the way of pragmatic transparency the better. |

@ vampboy - 8.07.20 - 08:17pm You've a good point. it shouldn't even be a question though really. it should be an office of service not an office of rule. way back in English history being appointed to a role in the church was seen as giving you political power. power corrupts. |

There still remains an element of political power to the CoE, the Bishops still get to sit in the HoL, although admittedly they aren't nearly as influential nowadays as they used to be. Oh and the Queen of course, who is the supreme head of the Anglican church after all. They(the CoE) also have a gigantic investment portfolio with stakes in some dubious businesses like Wonga the payday loan company for example. |

ok quick update on the leicester situation, I asked mrs t before about it, she has known for 2 weeks what was happening, a cloth supplier came into her office, delivering some rolls of cloth. He told her he had delivered to the factory a few days ago, and he said it was a bit iffy. Her boss heard him and after a chat, mrs t's boss phoned the dpt of trade. To report it, 2 weeks ago and word on the street is the factory was supposed to be on furlough.

@ tranie - 8.07.20 - 10:11pm So as soon as they get their bishophood they automatically get a seat in the house of lords ? Not sure exactly how they get chosen but no, I don't think so. There are 60odd Bishops but only 26 'Lords Spiritual' in the HoL. |
