''Thou shalt not kill.'' A law couldn't be formatted simpler. But does the law actually say what it says or is the ''killing'' under question of a highly specific nature? |

For instance can the law be used to push against capital punishment? To argue against eating animals? Military service (like JWs do)? Euthanasia? Suicide? Killing in self-defense? What killing is the killing in question?

The man who penned down the law led many wars, so I doubt it refers to war. The society which codified the law had capital punishment. The suicide of Samson is spoken of as a heroic sacrificial act (akin to the modern suicide bomber). Animals were killed for food.. And for other less productive purposes, like Samson burning 300 foxes in philistine fields. Killing when you're convinced God wants you to was also OK. What killing is killing?

imo its planning to end anothers life out of viciousness and heartlessness. a soldier killing is doing their job so cant be seen as heartless act in general tho some may or may not be. self defence is as it says defence not an act of cold calculating act. killing animals the nt says all things are good to eat.

I'd go with cold-blooded murder also. Some preacher taking a stance against military service was attacking NIV for reducing the KJV's ''Thou shalt not kill'' to ''You shall not murder.'' some other denomination doesn't even allow use of firearms in self-defense. Pro-life use the same reference too, as do people supporting various interests.

The way I see it, in the form it appears in the KJV the law lends itself to a myriad of interests which may not even have been the original intent. The rallying cry against capital punishment is equally from the same reference point.

I agree with much of this but do you think all killing in war is justified or allowed? Hitler believed he was doing do God's will, as did the crusaders. Is it possible to violate the law in war?
