In the name of Allah, the sole Almighty God, the most Beneficent the most Merciful... If we ask people who has limited knowledge about Islam/Quran: Which is the only chapter in the Quran that was named after a woman? They would mostly predict it could be Prophet's wife (e.g. Khadija or Aisha) or his daughter Fatima. But, surprisingly it is Mary (Maryam in Arabic). Mary, the mother of Isa (Jesus), holds a singularly exalted place in Islam as the only woman named in the Quran, which refers to her seventy times and explicitly identifies her as the greatest of all women. ![]() In the Quran, her story is related in three Meccan chapters (19, 21, 23) and four Medinan chapters (3, 4, 5, 66), and the nineteenth chapter of the scripture, titled Mary (Surah Maryam), is named after her. |

Mary was chosen twice by the Lord: O Mary! Verily Allah has chosen you and puried you and chosen you above the women of the worlds [3:42]; and the first choosing was her selection with glad tidings given to Imran. The second was that she became pregnant without a man, so in this regard, she was chosen over all other women in the world. ---------------------- Conception of Jesus (peace be upon him) And mention, [O Muhammad], in the Book [the story of] Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east. And she took, in seclusion from them, a screen. Then We sent to her Our Angel, and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man. She said, Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah. He said, I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy. She said, How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste? He said, Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed.'[19:16-21] |

Titles and Attributes (1) Qanitah: Mary is so called in sura 66:12.[33] The Arabic term implies the meaning, not only of constant submission to God, but also absorption in prayer and invocation, meanings that coincides with the image of Mary spending her childhood in the temple of prayer. In this way, Mary personifies prayer and contemplation in Islam. (2) Siddiqah: She who confirms the truth or She who has faith. Mary is called Siddiqah twice in the Quran (sura 5 (Al-Ma'ida), ayat 7375 and 66:12). The term has also been translated, She who believes sincerely completely. (3) Sajidah: She who prostrates to God in worship. The Quran states: O Mary! Worship your Lord devoutly: prostrate yourself. While in Sujud, a Muslim is to praise God and glorify Him. In this motion, which Muslims believe to be derived from Marian nature, hands, knees and the forehead touch the ground together. (4) Rakiah: She who bows down to God in worship. The Quran states: O Mary! Bow down in prayer with those men, who bow down. The command was repeated by angels only to Mary, according to the Muslim view. Ruku' in Muslim prayer during prayer has been derived from Mary's practice. (5) Tahirah: She who was purified. (6) Mustafia: She who was chosen. The Quran states: O Mary! God has chosen you and purified you and again he has chosen you above all women of all nations of the worlds. |

Together with wife of Pharaoh (Aasia), Mary is a role model and excellent example for entire Muslims ((And Allah presents an example of those who believed: the wife of Pharaoh, when she said, My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise and save me from Pharaoh and his deeds and save me from the wrongdoing people.... And [the example of] Mary, the daughter of 'Imran, who guarded her chastity, so We blew into [her garment] through Our angel, and she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures and was of the devoutly obedient)) Quran 66:11-12. |

@ almaida - 20.08.24 - 09:06pm i heard in Christian history, Mary was married to Joseph. But in Islamic Mary was never married to anyone and Prophet Yusuf was married to Zulaikha, am I right? There is way looooong time between era of prophet Yusuf (Joseph) and Mary... How it comes they were married? Yusuf was even before prophet Musa (Moses) peace be upon him... Scholars say there may be 250 to 300 years between Moses and Yusuf.. Then also all Other prophets came in 100s of years (e.g. David, Solomon,... etc).. Then finally Mary who gave birth to Jesus (pbuh) who was the last prophet before Prophet Mohammed (pbuh)... There's about 600 years between Jesus and Mohammed, peace be upon them all.. |

Regarding Yusuf having married to Zulaikha... Well, there is not explicit mentioning to this in Quran or Hadith.. But this is mentioned in a narration by imam ibn Inhaq in his book about Biographies... Also, mentioned by others in Tafsir.. So that might be true but cannot be certain about it. |

But i think Prophet Zakariya and Prophet Yahya is quiet close to Prophet Isa because Prophet Zakariya and Prophet Yahya is like uncle to Maryam? Am I right? |

@ almaida - 20.08.24 - 11:36pm Oh okay i understand.. But i think Prophet Zakariya and Prophet Yahya is quiet close to Prophet Isa because Prophet Zakariya and Prophet Yahya is like uncle to Maryam? Am I right? That's totally true... Prophet Zakaria was the gurdian of Mary from birth till she was all good matured. Prophet Zakaria is the father of prophet Yahya (John)... Jesus (Isa) was always supported and lived in the same time as prophet Yahya... Prophet Yahya has helped Jesus and support him in Dawah. - - - Some scholars say that Isa and Yaha are cousins, as this was mentioned in Hadith of Israa and Miaraaj.. This could be true.. But I think the other narration is more accurate the Zakaria was Uncle of Mary (the husbad of her aunt - mother side). - - - To Clarify, It is said that Imran (father of Mary) and Zakaria (father of Yahya) were brothers.. it is said, but not certain. They both married two sisters... Imran had got a dauighter (Mary) and then Zakaria made duaa to get offspring as mentioned in Quran.. Then he had got Yahya.. This means Yahya and Mary are cousins (mothers are sisters and fathers are brothers, as well). Jesus is the son of Mary, then Jesus can be called cousin of Yahya, thoug he is cousin of Mary actually. But language is flexible when it comes to such relationships. For example, you can call a person as a cousin, even if it is your parents are cousins.. so take it easy |
