The worship of the serpent is found in many parts of the Old World, the Americas, and even Australia, where Aboriginal people worship a gigantic python known by various names, but typically referred to as the Rainbow Serpent. It was said to have created the landscape, embodied the spirit of fresh water and punished lawbreakers.
