Should windows 7 be able to open .TAR files by default or do I need a program to expand these files? |

tar files are linux compressed files. don't think it's possible in win7. u can install linux virtually on windows using vmware and work freely in linux environment. without physically installing linux..

why do you want to open a tarball? Technically they are archival files, like .zip

use 7zip as adeeb222 said, dont delete it as you may need to redownload if you find you do need it after all. so i d take my time on the trash switch, you may regret it later. 7zip can open tar and tar.gz files, see whats inside and decide for yourself. as a 6.5GB file, it is likely to have at least something of value inside, even if the package is not what you hoped for. if not, then you know what you're deleting

I did it in the end by copying it to a Memory stick then opening it on my Mac then moving the uncompressed folder to the memory stick and then was able to install files onto my PC. It took about 2 hours to do.
