I'm almost in the same situation now... Can a Celeron 1.6 Ghz (single core) desktop will be able to handle windows7 smoothly?..... Other peripherals are strong enough i.e. 2GB DDR3 RAM, 1024mb internal graphics memory, G41 chipset family, 320GB SATA HDD etc..... Only concerned about the processor.... At the moment its running XP without any problem....

on a low powered system I would turn off windows aero it makes a difference. the extra 1gb of ram will help a lot on the single core celeron system though. myself I dont see what the big deal is with aero anyway its only cosmetic when you think about it. ive even turned it off on my quad core desktop lol iam only interested in maximum performance not how pretty things look

ive been running windows 8 developer on a 2.4ghz single core P4 with 512mb ram if thats anything to go by. although the cpu is faster it only has a fraction of the ram your celeron system has and remember ram can make more difference than a faster cpu. obviously its not a speed machine but it runs at an acceptable speed on windows 8 developer.

(depending on what generation of celeron you are using it could be as fast as the P4 cpu iam using here anyway)
