Carbon monoxide (CO)is an odorless, colorless n toxic gas. Coz it is impossible 2 see, taste or smell d toxic fumes, CO can kill u before u are aware it is in ur home. At lower levels of exposure, CO causes mild effects dat are often mistaken for the flu. Dis symptoms include headaches, dizziness, disorientation, nausea n fatigue. D effects of CO exposure can vary greatly from person to person depending on age, overall health n d concentration n length of exposure. Sources are: generators, kerosene stoves, leaking chimneys n furnaces, back-drafting from furnaces, gas water heaters, wood stoves, fireplaces, gas stoves n other gasoline powered equipment; automobile exhaust n tobacco smoke. Incomplete oxidation during combustion in gas ranges n unvented gas or kerosene heaters may cause high concentrations of CO in indoor air. Worn or poorly adjusted n maintained combustion devices (e.g., boilers, furnaces) can be significant sources, or if d flue is improperly sized, blocked, disconnected, or leaking. nearby roads,or parking areas can also be a source. Preventions: Keep gas appliances (i.e generators) properly adjusted. Consider purchasing a vented space heater when replacing an unvented one. Use proper fuel in kerosene space heaters. Install n use an exhaust fan vented to outdoors over gas stoves. Do not idle the car inside garage. LET'S JOING HANDS TOGETHER TO FIGHT THIS SILENT KILLER. |
