yom kippur is the most important date in the jewish calendar.it is a holiday,and many jews who do not observe any other jewish custom will still observe this one. they refrain from work.fast and attend schul,sorry synagogue. the holiday occurs on the tenth day of Tishri. Rosh Hashanah being New Year and the first of the month.the name Yom Kippur means Day of Atonement,and that is what it is.a day set aside to afflict the soul.to atone for sins committed during the past year.

Yom Kippur atones only for sins against God,any sins against other people must be atoned for before the fast.Yom Kippur is a sabbath no work may be performed on the day,and a complete fast,no eating or drinking,even water.there are also other restrictions.no washing or bathing. no cosmetics or deodorants. no wearing leather shoes,and of course no s*xual relations.these restrictions can be lifted where threat to life or health are involved. children under nine and women in childbirth are not permitted to
