Understand what to avoid and what you need to secure more by yourself. simply installing an anti-virus doesn't mean your computer is safe. Personally i hate the d*mn messages on the AVs that say something like (GREENLOGO) Your computer is safe from threats. No, no it isn't... It's only protected from what the AV knows and handles but nothing else. So it's a wrong kind of message because people really think their whole computer is safe BECAUSE MY SUPER L33T AV SAID SO OMG OMG OMG BOO HOO HOO. ![]() |

Of course it's better to always have AV and Firewall (+other anti-malware programs) even if you don't know how to use computer but you are still far from being safe completely.

This is rather useful: https://virusscan.jotti.org/ Jotti's malware scan is a free service that lets you scan suspicious files with several anti-virus programs. |

- Turn off AUTORUN for all devices and operating systems. - Make sure ''known extensions'' are NOT hidden. - Make sure your browser accepts ONLY 1st party cookies. - Block incoming requests in your firewall. Only allow outgoing by default. - Keep your OS and software up to date. - Turn on maximum heuristics and scanning in your ANTI VIRUS software. - Use Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer instead of Windows Process Manager. - Use an adblocker on your browser and disallow ALL ads. - Always fully clear your browser history, cache, cookies etc. at end of session (you can set your browser to do this when closing it) ... |

i did not include advanced CCLEANER routines because it requires you to actually know some stuff... But AUTORUN, that thing causes way more harm than convenience. Disable it for all devices in all of your operating systems. If you want to be slightly more hardc*re, turn off file manager thumbnails too. |

Also making sure the system does NOT hide any file extensions is important. To avoid running trojans and other unwanted stuff. For example file.mp3.exe is a classic one.
