Not many yrs ago i began 2 play d cello. Most people would say dat wat i am doing s 'learning 2 play' d cello. But these words carry n2 our minds d strange idea that there exists 2 very different processes: (1) learning 2 play d cello; and (2) playing d cello. They imply dat i will do d first untAl i have completed it, at wc point i will stop d first process and begin d second. In short, i will go on 'learning 2 play' until ì have 'learned 2 play' and then i will begin 2 play. Of course, this s nonesense. there are not 2 processes, but one. We learned 2 do sumthng by doing it. There s no other way. /john holt
