I must be honest. I myself have not experienced Thor myself, but indeed his thunder. We know, however, very little of the characteristics which the Germans of the first centuries ascribed to this god. His appearance, adventures and functions remain obscure.He was a much feared divinity. When the thunder bolt struck they said the god had cast his fiery weapon from on high. The weapon was represented ,as it seems as a missile axe, or per haps simply as a stone hammer made to be thrown at an enemy's head. It was a form of de fence and attack which the Teutons had used from remote times, and in the Northern Lands this hammer was regarded as Thor's habitual attribute. Donar was not only the god of thunder. He was to a certain extent the god of war. He was the favourite god of many tribes. He was the fearless and invincible warrior of imposing stature whose protection one hoped to obtain. His face was adorned with a long, red beard. |
