Respected British games magazine, GamesTM has been talking about Kinect in an article ''Is Kinect out of touch?'' Here are some of the most notable quotes: ''2009 seems a long time ago now. Not to Microsoft of course, which is still basking in its awesome profit and a shiny world record sticker from Guinness brings. Swap the boardrooms for front rooms, however, and Kinect is looking less like the future and more like the past. 2005, to be precise, when Nintendo wowed the world with the Wii Remote'' ''The hardwares been cut down in spec. Much vaunted features are only just being implemented, and games such as Kinect Star Wars arent doing any favours convincing people whats there works as well as it should.'' ''Playing it in anything less than abode that would shame Versailles is unfeasable at worst, and uncomfortable at best. And worst of all, theres very little software on it that can be quantified as excellent, or even good, with most games tailored towards players who just graduated from Fisher Price'' ''And why is legendary developer David Braben spending his time making games about stroking animals, or walking around Disneyland, instead of a new Elite? Just what is going on?'' '' 'It offers unparalleled interactivity' claims pretty much every developer thats ever set eyes on it. So why, beyond a few examples, havent we seen this game changing interactivity yet, and just why are some games that appeal to what could be considered a 'core' demographic seemingly broken?'' ''Kinect may well be improving every second, but what of it if the developers are more interested in churning out UFC Fitness Blah 2014? The long term future might be bright, but isnt there the risk that the glut of below par experiences might consolidate gamers apathy as another barrage of shovelware hits stores?'' ''And neither it must be said, do the next wave of Kinect titles look like turning the tide. As we anti te another wave of software, the story seems to be the same as its always been in the motion control arena: fitness games, sports games, dancing games, supposedly 'core' games that also have Kinect functionality as an entree. Like Ghost Recon Future Soldier, in fact.'' ''The second feature enables players to aim and fire their weapons via robotic and jerky movements that would make Bez blush. Is the fact the 'core' part of the Kinect experience is out of the main game an admission of technical or creative failure'' ''Either way, from a core perspective its not inspiring in any way, shape or form, and yet it speaks of endemic bandwagon hopping by the big boys. Retrofitting games that are supposed to be played with a pad with a Kinect mode and slapping 'Better with Kinect' on the box isnt going to convince anyone that the technology is worth investing in, least of all the people tasked with creating games for it.'' ''For the 'core', Kinect seems to represent empty promises, because, A) the core position probably didnt want it in the first place, and B) no-one can quite decide the best way to implement it. Can it be addictive, as Braben hopes? Or is it revolutionary, as games like Kinect Star Wars would have us believe and are failing so badly to convince us?'' ''Or maybe they wont, or maybe theyll remember it as a half baked peripheral that simply led the path to the next, more encompassing iteration on the next Xbox'' ''When a studio as distinguished as Rare (via Scott Henson, Studio Manager) states that 'All of our learning boils down to two words - make the experience social and keep it simple' it paints a bleak picture for those who wanted the tech of Milo and Kate, and got Get fit With Mel B.'' About the games: Mas* Effect 3 ''Bioware has gone very quiet since E3 and has refused to answer any of the questions specifically related to Kinect. Not a good sign'' Fable The Journey '' 'This is your horse, and youre going to have a relationship with your horse' Peter Molyneux told Kotaku this summer. Are we now, Peter?'' Kinect Sports Season Two ''Rare is one of the most imaginative and creative development studios in the world. So why has Kinect only inspired it to create casual sports games so far?'' Sesame Street Once upon a monster ''There isnt one with 'Once upon a monster', unless Double Fine pulls a Brutal Legend and sneaks in an RTS mode this is sure to be a perfect kids game'' Disneyland Adventures ''If this is just a virtual recreation of Disneyland, then Frontier really has its work cut out to separate the game from the real thing. There needs to be something here that improves on reality'' Ghost Recon Future Soldier ''Ghost Recons optional shooting range mode allows you to test your weapons using motion control, but Ubisofts E3 demonstration , in which a player stood in a squat position and fired his fingers like a child hardly captured the tone of the Tom Clancy fiction'' |
