Arsenal Football Club began life when a group of workers at the Woolwich a*senal Armament Factory decide to form a football team in late 1886. The club operated under the name of Dial Square and played there first match, a 6-0 win over Eastern Wanderers on December 11th 1886. Soon after, the name Royal a*senal was adopted but in 1891 the club turned professional and changed its name to Woolwich a*senal. In 1893 they joined the Football League and 20 years later, in 1913, moved to Highbury. Following the First World War, a*senal were voted into the newly expanded First Division, where they have remained ever since. |
