REPORT BY NEW ZEALAND PC WORLD--If youve become accustomed to 1,000 price tags on smartphones, then pay attention because Huawei and 2degrees are offering the IDEOS U8150 Android 2.2 handset for just 379. Of course, there are going to be some trade offs for that lower price and Huawei has made no bones about the fact that its targeting the mass market end of the smartphone continuum. For your money you get the very latest version of Android, 2.2 Froyo, which at the time of writing makes the IDEOS unique in the local market. It also means you can install downloaded apps to a microSD card, which youll need because the U8150 only has 150MB of available onboard memory. On the downside you get just a 2.8-inch capacitive touchscreen with a low resolution of just 320 x 240 pixels. The small screen means the U8150 is nicely compact compared to other phones but the low resolution means things tend to look faintly blurry. The capacitive touchscreen is also not very responsive and I found myself regularly hitting icons multiple times trying to get apps to open. Multi-touch gestures are also out so there is no pinching to zoom or the like. The U8150 is decidedly plasticky in terms of its construction and feel but it does feel robustly built and it comes with a pair of coloured back plates (blue and pink) that you can swap at will. Physical b*ttons are kept to a minimum with just a very small on/off b*tton on the top side, volume rocker b*ttons on the left side, and call and end b*ttons and a large round select b*tton beneath the screen. Unfortunately, that big select b*tton is decidedly clunky and was the one thing that made me think of the U8150 as cheap. There are also four touch-sensitive b*ttons ranged below the screen for Back, Search, Home and Menu. Haptic feedback lets you know youve pressed a b*tton successfully. Text input is touch only, and that small screen makes this a real hunt and peck exercise in portrait mode. Youre far better off to turn the U8150 on its side and let the accelerometer spin the screen to landscape mode for successful text input. A standard 3.5mm headphone jack is provided for your favourite headset and the camera is a pretty ordinary 3.2 megapixels and has no flash. Theres also no front-facing camera for video calls. Huawei has seen fit to install Android 2.2 with not fancy overlay of its own, something I liked, and which means you can customise it your own way with your choice of apps. Froyo 2.2 also provides for multiple user accounts, USB tethering and internet connection sharing. One possibly major oversight, however, is that the U8150 doesn't support Flash. Setting up your Gmail and Google Apps accounts is, as you might expect, a simple and easy process. I was also pleased to see threaded text messaging. The U8150 is equipped to deliver 7.2Mbits/s HSDPA and has Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n for data connectivity, as well as Bluetooth for wireless headsets. Theres also a built-in GPS for satellite navigation. Performance In use the U8150 shows its downscale pedigree with a sometimes laggy attitude to opening apps or responding to commands. But this is an entry-level device with just a 528MHz processor and 256MB of RAM. Call quality and network reception is reasonable and the onboard speakers were loud enough for speakerphone conversations. The battery, however, is a bit of a weakling and last barely a day with its 1,200mAh capacity. On the whole, and given its sharp price point, the U8150 is a very good entry to the Android eco-system for the young and hip, or the cautious but curious. |
