When I was in the 3rd grade there was an old couple that, once a month, would come to the school to pass out pamphlets of verses for the students to memorize. For each verse memorized and quoted aloud, a student received a small prize or reward. The more one recalled at a time the better the reward. My first verse was John 3:16 and I was rewarded with a fruit-shaped eraser.
